There are two types of defamation, libel and slander. Libel is defamation in written form such as a defamatory statement in a letter. Slander is defamation in spoken form such as someone calling you a thief in a management meeting.
Not everything you may consider bad that is said about you is defamation. Childish name calling, slight remarks and statements intended as jokes may not be defamation under California law. If a statement does injure your reputation, consult with an experienced law firm because you may be entitled to recover the damages to your reputation in additon to any emotional, physical and mental injuries you have sustained as a result of the defamation.
