Not every "hostile work environment" is illegal under California law. If the "hostile work environment" is coming from a rude, uncaring, unprofessional and/or unfair employer, that by itself is typically not a "hostile work environment." You typically have to look at the motivations of the person(s) acting hostile towards you because California law does not protect employees from mean spirited employers who are not otherwise violating the law.
"Hostile work environment" claims that are illegal under California law typically occur in the context of a discrimination, harassment or retaliation claim. If the intent of the employer, which may include the person(s) actually committing the discrimination, harassment and retaliation, is to violate the laws protecting individuals from these unlawful acts then the employee may have a valid claim for a "hostile work environment."
The "hostile work environment" must also be hostile to a reasonable person, not simply what you may consider to be hostile looking at it just through your own perspective.
