Severance pay is not required in California, regardless of the length of employment, the employee's position or even the employee's past satisfactory job performance.  However, some employers contractually bargain for severance pay in employment contracts.  Other employers offer severance pay as an incentive to employees to waive their legal rights.  Before agreeing to a severance package, consult with an attorney in order to review the agreement to ensure you are fully aware of the legal rights you are waiving.
